ABSTRACT

A private Meeting of the Committees of the Empire Parliamentary Association which are specially studying 'Migration and Land Settlement within the Empire' and 'Trade, Communications and Finance,' was held in the Rooms of the Association, Westminster Hall, on Tuesday, 15th May, 1928, to hear an address by the Hon. John W. Downie, Minister of Mines and Works, Southern Rhodesia., and to hold an informal discussion and exchange of views upon 'Rhodesia: Development and Expansion, with special Relation to Markets and Migration.' Rhodesian interests are also controlling the chrome that comes from India – between 40,000 and 50,000 tons – and also the ore that comes from New Caledonia. They have some of the best known asbestos mines that exist in the world. Touching on live-stock, most of the beef people had to import formerly from the Colony and Bechuanaland; to-day they have / live-stock to the extent of some two million head.
