ABSTRACT

Land for farming and ranching in Northern Rhodesia is granted by the Crown to settlers under a Permit of Occupation for a period of five years, which may be extended to twenty years, subject to occupation and other conditions, with the option of purchase by instalments. The size of a farm granted to settlers with this capital is usually about 2,000 acres in extent, and the price of the land ranges between 5/- and 15/- per acre depending upon the quality of the soil, water supply, distance from the railway line, etc., each farm being valued according to its special qualities. As the consideration for the grant of a Permit of Occupation the tenant is required to pay an amount equal to 10 per cent of the valuation placed upon the farm, this amount is payable on issue of the Permit of Occupation.
