ABSTRACT

The decision to appoint a committee to consider certain of the recommendations relating to Nigeria contained in the Report of the Commission on the Marketing of West African Cocoa was announced by Your Excellency in the Legislative Council on the 15th of March. 1939. The attitude of the middlemen as represented by the Nigerian Produce Traders' Union towards the Commission's recommendations relating to the expansion of the system of co-operative marketing is one of uncompromising hostility. They have assumed that if the recommendations are implemented they will all be forced out of business forthwith. The Traders' Union hold the view that any increase in public expenditure with a view to the extension of the system of co-operative marketing would be a waste of public money and cannot be justified by the results already achieved. The Traders' Union does not claim to represent the smaller broker or the buyer by measure.
