ABSTRACT

The crisis in the main staples of commerce has called attention to the danger of too great reliance upon a limited range of products as income-producers. This danger is especially great when those products pass along restricted trade channels. In Kenya some attention has been given to potatoes trade in the past, but the exportation has been confined in the main to produce of native origin. The usual season for export from Kenya to Bombay is from July to January. Italian supplies commence to arrive in late July. The East African potatoes referred to are of native origin. Italian potatoes realize appreciably higher prices than Kenya potatoes, the difference sometimes reaching Sh. 40 per ton. It has been suggested in the local press that new potatoes may find a sale in the United Kingdom at attractive prices if put upon the market about Christmas. Very high prices are secured by the earliest arrivals of new potatoes.
