ABSTRACT

The Jane Trattles letters conclude in this selection, with one written on 19 June 1867, to ‘My Dear Mother’ from ‘Mary and George Readman’. Apparently, Jane’s daughter Mary got married and moved to Australia. This letter is included to illustrate the far-flung nature of many migrant British families, and for the comparisons made with the rest of the family still in Michigan. The last letter in the series is dated 29 December 1868, and is from Jane to her son and daughter. It includes talk of visiting England – showing that they still thought deeply about their mother country – and includes a reference to the election of Grant: ‘we hoape he will do good in the Nation and bring things all right, the war is at prisent ended but the spirit of the South is very Bitter Cruel’.
