William Tannahill Stirling wrote this letter from New Jersey to his father, Robert Stirling, who lived in Waterside, Kirkintilloch, Dumbarton. It describes his dramatic voyage, his work for a New Jersey farmer and how America compares with Scotland. Stirling signs his name ‘Sterling’ in one place, but ‘Stirling’ is the correct spelling and the one used here.
