ABSTRACT

The Isaac and Charlotte Taylor letters begin in this volume and continue in Volume 4. They were written from Unadilla, Michigan, to Bradford, Yorkshire, and include information and advice for others to follow, for example, ‘a man [can] get in the farming line from ten to fifteen Dollars per month’. Not only was there good land available, but the American system of education is lauded for government land being set aside for sale to support schools – a system that resulted in the highest literacy rates in the world (see the introduction to Volume 2). The letter of 25 November 1852 indicates the size and strength of the English community: ‘a great many English in this section of Country you may think we are lonley but you are mistaken’. The Taylors’ Yorkshire accent is hinted at where they write ‘om’ for ‘home’.
