ABSTRACT

This is a classic letter by an English immigrant who left ahead of his wife and children and is concerned that he has not received replies to his letters to them. Trayes wishes his wife to send his two older children to join him, and then the next year he will return to England to ‘fetch’ her and the rest of the family and bring them all to his new home in Cleveland, Ohio, where he bought land on speculation and was now running a tavern he had purchased. Such complex family reunions were not uncommon, and are reflected in the county history biographies as well. Trayes also provides fascinating details of his extensive travels in North America, including his contact with Indians in Canada. He clearly misses his family very much.
