ABSTRACT

The Robert Shedden letters were written from Kane County, Illinois, and can be effectively used with the biographies from that county that are also in this volume. The Sheddens were Scots and were farming with the help of their new threshing machine, but their regret was that they came two years too late, as land prices had risen since then. It is clear from the letters that other Scottish immigrants were near them, forming a cluster of sorts, which helped their assimilation. These are classic immigrant letters loaded with information.
