ABSTRACT

The family of Samuel Ward came from Worcestershire over the course of the 1820s and 1840s. This chapter contains much information about the family's experience with farming, the Civil War and business. Samuel Ward remained in his native country until ten years of age. In December, 1847, he left Liverpool, England, on the sailing-vessel 'Andrew Foster', and after a nine-weeks' voyage landed with his parents in New York. From there, he subsequently moved with them to Connecticut and worked on a farm until sixteen years of age, in the meantime acquiring a very limited education in the common schools, for he was obliged to spend most of his time in youth in labor on the farm. In 1853 or 1854, he went to Harrisburgh, Pa., and clerked for some time for the State Mutual Insurance Company, in which his brother was Secretary.
