ABSTRACT

Guy Bentall was trotting his horse briskly along the winding road that led into Dabenham. Only four days had passed since he left it in disgrace, after an angry and undignified scene with his father and bitter words with the girl he loved. The day before he had rushed through the village in a car with Colonel Rudd on a surveying expedition, and now he was sent there with certain definite orders to prepare the way for his commander’s coming.
