ABSTRACT

KARYL left the House of Commons abruptly, after reading her proposed measures of reform. Outwardly calm, she was inwardly as stirred as her hearers, who had greeted each suggestion with plauditory or derisive cheers, according to their different views, and exhibited signs of strong agitation. Outside the House her automobile stood waiting, but she felt the need of exercise, and told her chauffeur to return home without her, as she intended to walk. It was a clear night, with a gleaming crescent overhead, and a tonic breeze blowing from the north-west full in her face. She stepped out briskly, in her long loose coat and close-fitting hat, thinking how good it was to be out of doors under the deep blue canopy of night, and alone.
