ABSTRACT

The ray of light which had illumined the mind of our heroine for so long a time, being now totally extinguished, my task is almost at an end. From this period she has sought her happiness in a path where it is most certain to be found – in the performance of her duty as a wife and a mother, having consented, without reluctance, to abdicate the rights of equality, and to let the world go on in its old course; whilst she confines the energy of her mind within the gentle bonds of domestic cares and pleasures, and employs her active spirit, not in awakening discontent and rebellion amongst her poorer neighbours, but in ameliorating their situation, and as far as her cares and assistance can go, in striving / to remove every cause of regret and complaint; whilst the contented rustics, no longer instructed to consider her as a rival, look up to her with gratitude and affection; and her delighted husband, viewing every thing she does with love and confidence, applies himself to second her plans of benevolence, and praises Heaven that his wife is no longer a philosopher.
