When Emilia was left to herself, she reflected with horror on her situation. Attached in the strongest manner to another, not from sudden passion, but from principle founded on long friendship, and a real conviction of uncommon merit, and mutual regard, she saw herself in the immediate prospect of being demanded in marriage by a person to whom caprice itself could from no objection, and whose offer, by her silence, she had rather encouraged than refused. /
