ABSTRACT

The women have been healed from evil spirits and infirmities. The women are described as having been healed from either a spirit of infirmity or from infirmities or weaknesses, a term that seems to be predicated of women more than men, but the data is too limited to draw any conclusions. Linguistically, the Lukan gospel constructs the symbolic reality of the health care system in its own unique way. Women healed are labelled demon-possessed in a way which suggests a deviance from a Lukan community norm which was in existence or which was being constructed by the community. The full import of the control, the marginalizing, on all the women healers of the Lukan community is written on the bent over body of this woman. Martha is described in Luke as 'distracted with much serving' in Lk.
