ABSTRACT

Teleworkers should be self-motivated, self-disciplined, well-organised, show initiative, be good communicators, good time managers, able to cope with lack of social contact, computer literate, good decision makers, and effective problem solvers. Home-based teleworking may not be feasible if space is at a premium in the home of a potential teleworker. When setting up a telework operation, it can be useful to adopt guidelines to clarify the responsibilities of both teleworkers and their managers. Manufacturing, Science and Finance and the banking union BIFU have similar sets of guidelines. The art is in selecting appropriate technology for particular kinds of communication. People who have been teleworking for a number of years recognise a need for training in the management of virtual organisations. Organisations like Aslib, the Library Association, Informed Business Services and TFPL offer not only Internet courses but also courses on a range of topics of relevance to the professional development of the Library and Information Science worker.
