ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to consider options and difficulties associated with re-feeding, reducing binge/purge cycles and ultimately helping Edi to stabilise their eating patterns. If carers had their way they would choose to spend the whole time in the workshops discussing how to restore regular eating for Edi. This would not be helpful as it is likely that carers would resort to a rhino-like approach in their eagerness to fix the problems. Having said that, the exercises in this chapter could be used as a standalone session for carers already familiar with the New Maudsley model and who are struggling with issues around food, weight and shape. Although this chapter has exercises focused on food and weight talk, shape talk would require the same strategies. The aim is to help Edi to talk more about their emotions during these processes than food weight or shape.
