ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a framework for individual sessions which can be adapted by the adult, based on the age, interests, motivation and engagement of the child/young person. It provides a range of worksheets that may be used whenever particular issues arise or a specific area needs to be addressed. The suggestions in the frameworks are necessarily incomplete as the adult will need to plan suitable activities adapted to the age and needs of the youngster. The chapter argues that Katya completed five sessions following the adapted cognitive-behavioural model. The introductory session will necessarily differ from the others as it is ‘testing the waters’, getting to know the individual and setting the stage for the work. Continuing sessions are the ones in which the bulk of the work is completed. The final session is an important one as it reviews the strategies which have been most useful and will most likely stay in the mind.
