ABSTRACT

It is a popular belief that education happens in school. Unfortunately, many people – some of them teachers – extend their willingness to believe this to the point where they are ready to say that education happens only in school. The English which child learned at home may suffice independently of any school learning, to keep him well ahead of his classroom neighbours. A more ambitious way of tackling parents in the home is through the 'educational visitor' scheme pioneered in the Norwich area by members of the National Association for the Teaching of English working with local teachers and families. Parents can help by not waiting until they have a grievance, real or imaginary, before they approach the school – and it is probably a good start to leave the automatic rifle and the Dobermann Pinscher at home.
