ABSTRACT

Many teachers would think it invidious to single out particular pupils with problems and would prefer to involve the whole class or year group in a peer-tutoring scheme and, indeed, this makes some aspects of the project easier to arrange. Where the problem is seen as one of improving the general level of reading in the class and where there are no pupils so far behind that they desperately need to make accelerated progress the simplest form of peer-tutoring can take place. This has been called 'relaxed reading' by some people, 'reading in pairs' or 'shared reading' by others and 'paired reading' (incorrectly) by yet others. Mutual enjoyment of the reading process should be the principal aim. The essential element is that arrangements must be made for regular opportunities for tutoring to take place in circumstances which are conducive to progress, understanding and above all, to pleasurable enjoyment.
