ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides some sense of an historical context to the issues raised, by examining developments relating to the introduction and implementation of the National Curriculum and some of the associated questions posed for those in education. It explores the ‘Classroom Issues' is a series of articles based around specific practical concerns literacy and its development in both primary and secondary schools. The book addresses thematic issues embedded in the analysis of some prominent African-American texts commonly in use at GCSE and 'A' levels, raising historical and social issues relating to views of 'education' manifest. It defines 'Principles in Practice' anticipates likely developments in the future, and considers theoretical and practical issues which schools will need to review as part of their future organisation and teaching.
