ABSTRACT

In Chapter 1 we outlined our model of the reading to learn process. The four key concepts in that model were purpose, strategy, outcome and review, and we explored each of these in turn in the chapters which followed. Our aim was to show how the reader could increase control over his reading by concentrating on these four elements in his reading process. Inevitably, in discussing one we had to talk about others. Our whole argument is that reading to learn is a subtle, complex, dynamic thing. The different parts of the process interact. We have separated the parts out in order to focus on them better. Now, however, we need to put them together again. In this chapter we look at the reading to learn process as a whole, by bringing all the parts together in one major activity. We then go on to sketch how the reader can plan a reading development programme for him or her self.
