Problem-solving Parent Conferences assume that it is necessary to understand the environmental and systemic contexts that influence behaviors and social-emotional functioning. This ecological perspective has redefined our approach to educational and psychological service delivery. Individual behaviors are understood within and across family, school, and community contexts. Family systems and social learning approaches have changed our perspectives on individual psychopathology and thus altered our approach to assessment and intervention. Empirically supported practice has evolved to highlight the advantages of multisystem interventions. These approaches integrate individual and systemic strategies and address resources and supports for change and barriers to change across home, school, and community systems. The ecological and multisystem perspectives require incorporation of diversity and cultural considerations into both assessment and problem-solving.
