ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the key elements of problem assessment and definition that are enhanced by the integration of behavioral and systemic approaches. In addition to a traditional functional behavior assessment, strategies for understanding the relational functions of behaviors and the fit between the behaviors of concern and their broader systemic contexts are delineated. The maladaptive functions of behaviors and the way they are reinforced are generally similar within classroom and home systems. The assessment stage identifies common interaction and reinforcement patterns. The therapist guides the discussion to summarize the resources and barriers for creating change in student behaviors. This stage concludes with a consensus regarding problem definition, goals specified in adaptive and prosocial terms, and strengths and resources to support change within individuals and the family and school systems.
