ABSTRACT

Storytelling is a way of guiding the audience through an imaginary experience: pushing the right button at the right time to elicit particular responses. The goal of any story is to draw the audience into another world where people are facing challenges of various kinds – maybe extreme, life-threatening ones, maybe only minor inconveniences. Story consists of events and feelings – external challenges and internal struggles. What matters is that the story has been set up: the character is introduced, presented with a challenge and allowed to express feelings about potential success or failure. One of the chief characteristics of web series is their bingeability, which has fostered major changes in the way shows are structured both at the episode level and season or series level as well. Many episodes of the web series Broad City are structured as vignettes. Not much happens in the sense of there being a setup, rising action, Death Star moment or resolution.
