ABSTRACT

We consider the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and how it helped shape the curriculum of multicultural education in the 1990s and 2000s. A summary of the act includes the original intent – the equitable treatment of all regardless of race, color, sex, religion, language or national origin. Several court cases associated with schooling, affirmative action, language difference and segregation are reviewed. Next, some of the issues of Civil Rights in the 21st century, such as Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ issues, are considered.
