ABSTRACT

Dr Ray Carter first developed his model as a means for appraising potential suppliers during a sourcing process. The model has become recognised as a useful checklist when undertaking supplier appraisal during the sourcing process, however it can also be used for supplier assessment during the execution of a contract. The following 10Cs make up the supplier appraisal checklist: Competency, Capacity, Commitment, Control, Cash, Cost, Consistency, Corporate Social Responsibility/Clean, Culture and relationships, and Communication. The model has often been compared with the much-quoted ‘5 Rights of Purchasing’, and it has been viewed as a more detailed checklist when appraising suppliers prior to entering into potentially long-term relationships. The model is just a list of things to remember when appraising a supplier during the sourcing process – and not a model. The model’s evolution is difficult to comprehend and is equally referred to as the 7Cs, 9Cs or 10Cs, depending upon which text book/edition is being referenced.
