ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 explores how and why particular members of the same family become subject to intergenerational incarceration while others manage to avoid imprisonment. Factors such as gender (i.e. masculine and feminine scripts for rationalising involvement in crime), availability of caregivers/capable guardians, individual agency, and like issues, are critically discussed. The chapter also builds on previous work examining how incarcerated fathers and mothers try – from the vantage point/confines of prison – to protect their children from the cycle of crime and repeat imprisonment.
