ABSTRACT

This chapter will explore how the public police have been exposed to privatisation. It begins by considering the general concept of privatisation and how it has been applied to the police. The chapter revisits ‘Extreme Profitshire’ from the first edition of this book to consider to what extent the UK police have been ‘privatised’. The privatisation of the police through load shedding, contracting out and the embracing of private sector management practices, among others, are used to explore police privatisation. The chapter also considers more broadly the experience of other countries in the privatisation of the public police.
