ABSTRACT

This is the first of three chapters which examine some of the different types of ‘hybrid policing’. The chapter explores a wide range of state bodies that engage in policing but which would not be generally considered as a form of ‘public police’. It considers bodies that protect the state such as state security bodies and immigration enforcement bodies; entities that protect government finances; and bodies that protect the public, the environment and professions/occupations. The chapter considers the crossover with regulation too, as well as some other uniformed forms of state policing.
