ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the contribution of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to policing. It starts by examining the major contribution of such bodies to the policing of crimes against animals, such as by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in England and Wales. It also explores other areas where NGOs are engaged in policing, such as child protection and the policing of professions and sports. Some sectors and industries have also funded their own policing bodies, particularly in the area of piracy and counterfeiting of products, and these will also be considered. Finally the chapter will briefly explore some campaigning NGOs that also sometimes become involved, such as Greenpeace amongst others.
