ABSTRACT

This chapter considers concludes the book by providing a summary of the story so far as outlined and discussed and then considers and speculates on the possibilities for a future world changed beyond all comprehension by the COVID-19 pandemic which has come to push the state and public sector back into the foreground. The experts were now back in fashion. The notion nevertheless persists that pandemics are blips rather than an integral part of history. There is a belief that humans are no longer part of the natural world and can create an autonomous ecosystem, separate from the rest of the biosphere. We are superior beings and can control the world in our interests. COVID-19 is telling us we cannot. Technology will help us adapt in our present extremity. Physical mobility can be reduced by shifting many of our activities into cyberspace. Offices, schools, universities, general practitioner surgeries and other work centres are most likely to change permanently. So, what about crime possibilities in this new world order? Well, at a time of significant economic recession, when legitimate jobs become few and far between, you can usually rely on the illegitimate labour market to provide new crime opportunities.
