ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the challenge of resourcing issues in relation to taking a lead in compassion using a case study for compassionate care. It considers the importance of resourcing for compassionate care, the potential resources required – and why they are central to people for whom we care. The chapter focuses on taking the lead on influencing resourcing, in terms of what role nurses can play and how we can lead change in relation to maintaining a compassionate approach despite resource constraints. It utilizes Vikas's approach to his role and Shapna's needs to illustrate how these issues can be central to care in a resource-constrained environment. The chapter discusses the relationship between resourcing and ensuring excellence in compassionate nursing and the potentially negative impact that resource constraints can have on our relationships with patients and clients. It discusses how nurses can take a lead in influencing care so that compassion remains central, despite the challenge of resourcing.
