ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a challenge that as hindering compassionate care – that of the organisational culture of the practice environment. Organisational culture has been likened to the personality of an organisation: Culture is comprised of the assumptions, values, norms and tangible signs of organization members and their behaviors. The chapter focuses on how organisational culture influences practice and what makes a positive practice environment. It discusses the importance of developing an emotionally intelligent culture in taking practice forward. The role of the team leader is paramount, but every member of the team has a part to play in this process. Transformational and emotionally intelligent leadership are crucial to developing a positive practice culture where staff and patients feel valued, and where only excellent and compassionate nursing care is the norm. Transformational leadership strategies and staff-focused environments empower others. These involve such leadership traits as positivity and accessibility together with listening skills and collaborative working strategies which help build trust.
