ABSTRACT
The Linear B script that had been used for the palaces' administration passed into oblivion; the Greeks of later centuries used a totally different form of writing. Some Greeks fled to the west coast of Asia Minor. The Greeks who lived in Ionia, some recently settled, some living there since the Late Bronze Age and there developing their identity as 'Ionians', were later to contribute greatly to the revival of Greek culture. The Early Iron Age is also the time at which later Greek tradition dated the invasion of the Dorians namely, Greeks speaking the Doric dialect, who lived in the Peloponnese, on Crete and in the south-west of Asia Minor. When the Phoenicians, in Homer’s epics well known as traders, settled on the island of Cyprus in the ninth century they encountered Greeks who had been living there since the Mycenaean era.
