ABSTRACT

The seventh chapter presents a new typology for interest groups along intraorganisational criteria. It discusses how the two organisational dimensions can be meaningfully combined and how they interact. First, it investigates existing classification schemes of interest groups and explains how some of their shortcomings can be overcome with an intraorganisational approach. Second, it presents a four-fold typology of interest groups in the European Union along their internal organisation. These ideal types will be illustrated with the twelve-group case study, including data from the expert interviews. The typology has been developed inductively, using the insights which were gained during the empirical analysis of the two dimensions of interest group organisation. It draws on both the analytical framework and the findings from the empirical analysis in this book.
