ABSTRACT

The participants' experiences with the sources of cultural dissonance were lived through the context of their own heritage culture. The three main categories of sources of cultural dissonance are national differences, religious differences, and communication difficulties. The diversity in the levels of national economic attainment of the police officers within a United Nations Police (UNPOL) organization was the source of much stereotyping, bias, and cultural dissonance. In addition to national leadership culture, each country has its own national policing philosophy and policing methodology. UNPOL officers from countries that have been traditional enemies or that have some existing national tensions, tended to have interpersonal dissonance as an extension of these existing or historic national tensions. In a simple acculturation paradigm, the difficulties encountered by an expatriate worker in adjusting to their new environment do have an effect on the host country nationals who are already present.
