ABSTRACT

Simulation models are common nowadays, as computers have become more accessible and less expensive. In this approach, the model often involves the use of a computer program or some technological tool to generate a scenario based on a set of given or assumed rules. In this chapter, the use of simulation models to solve a number of well-known problems will be discussed. These problems include the “Broken Spaghetti” problem, a one-dimensional random walk simulation, the gameshow-inspired Monty Hall problem, the Buffon’s needle problem, and the “Secretary Problem”. As before, a detailed description of each problem will first be presented, together with notes for teachers, followed by suggestions on how the modelling activity could be carried out.
