ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is mathematical modelling projects. While mathematical modelling lessons provide students with the learning experiences to develop their competencies and skills in modelling, projects are typically more demanding and require students to consolidate these skills and utilise them appropriately. In this chapter, four projects arising from real-life examples are introduced and described. A model on the queueing process will first be presented. This is followed by a discussion of the SARS epidemic. Then, a project that requires a model to check the authenticity and accuracy of identification numbers is proposed. The last project discussed is about predicting the time it would take for water to drain from a tank. As in previous chapters, each project is accompanied by a set of guiding questions and discussion points to help the teacher along.
