ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 discusses spatial cognition in a broader perspective. First, it looks at social and technological aspects of spatial cognition, focusing on the systems of location identification and the development of a spatially enabled society. Then, the chapter considers geography and geoscience as major spatial disciplines that involve a variety of spatial tasks and advanced spatial thinking. The chapter also discusses different types of geospatial concepts and the relationship between geospatial thinking and spatial ability. It then sees how geoscience spatial tasks span a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. The chapter next considers spatial awareness in the age of satellite navigation. It looks at an empirical study that found a negative impact of accumulated use of in-car navigation systems on wayfinding and spatial orientation, and discusses implications for the future of spatial thinking in a spatially enabled society. The chapter concludes with a summary of major research questions of spatial cognition and experience discussed in the book.
