ABSTRACT

This chapter considers all of the aspects that go into creating a quality recorded piece of music–those that the producer helps to refine: intention, concept, hooks, melody, harmony, rhythm, lyrics, song structure, arrangement density of arrangement, instrumentation, performance, equipment, and the mix. It outlines the common suggestions that recording engineers make in each area. The chapter examines each of the components in order to put “the mix” into perspective–as only one component that makes up a quality recorded piece of music. One of the most important things to watch out for is that the lyrics are rhythmically correct. In most styles of music, it is critical that the lyrics fit the music rhythmically. There are specific techniques that musicians must learn to play an instrument correctly, technically. These will vary depending on the style of music being played. The quality of musicianship makes a big difference in the amount of time it takes to get an acceptable performance.
