ABSTRACT

Once producers have got the decision process in place and they have put the band at ease, they can begin to critique and refine each of the 13 aspects of a recorded piece of music with the band. These 13 aspects are: concept, intention, melody, rhythm, harmony, lyrics, density of arrangement, instrumentation, song structure, performance, mix, quality of recording and equipment, and hooks. There are two aspects of “concept” to critique. First, is the quality of the concept. Second is the cohesiveness of the concept. Intention involves holding a certain energy or emotion throughout the recording and mixing process with 100 percent focus! The melody is one of the central themes around which a song is based. Sometimes it is the central theme. Harmony, at its most basic level, is simply two notes being sounded simultaneously. Chord density refers to the number of notes that make up the chord.
