ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the title of the book and sets that into context by looking at three historical ages – pre-industrial, industrial and post-industrial – and by setting the scene for how learning and education systems have evolved. The chapter also includes a set of definitions of common words used in education and asks the reader to reflect on the what they understand by certain terms. There is also a discussion of what are called ‘Enabling Technologies’. These are a set of common technologies that are now ubiquitous and are being used by every area of society to support the changes to the way services are delivered. Thus, the question is posed: how is education interpreting these technologies?
