ABSTRACT

This chapter is for those who are not only interested in why some conflict resolution attempts work well at overcoming social divisions – but also when they do. Public conflict resolutions are complex systems, which do not follow deterministic rules and thus are more difficult to predict. It is crucial that practitioners, public authorities and scholars understand the logic behind the necessity to unravel the complex dynamics of dispute resolution beyond isolated case studies. The objective is to improve public conflict resolution, both its analysis and application. Hence, in this chapter, I will provide methodological guidelines and instructions for cross-case assessment, including an evaluative framework, which is transferable to different cultural, political and juridical contexts.
