ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 covers developing engaging managers within an organisation, and whilst all four enablers of engagement are vital, it is clear that employing engaging managers is the single most important factor. Given organisational inertia and resistance to change, six areas of review are outlined: values, behaviours, rewards, recruitment processes, vision and learning improvement and consolidation; these are then related to the use of Motivational Maps. MacLeod’s three behaviours of the engaging manager are described as well as Goffee and Hunt’s four skills. The limitations of goal-setting through the prism of the nine motivators are outlined. Finally, the importance of the recruitment process in acquiring engaging managers in the first place is stressed. Detailed advice is provided on how the Motivational Maps can be used in the interviewing process to ensure the accurate selection of the right candidate.
