ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses working with some of the most commonly seen types of clients and specific clinical concerns in equine-assisted counseling and psychotherapy (EACP). In addition, a section of the chapter is devoted to working with military servicemembers and their family members. Specific concerns to be addressed include grief, eating disorders, autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety, trauma, posttraumatic stress (PTS), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance use disorder. The chapter will discuss the unique needs of each population, guidelines for working with each population, and suggested session structure and activities. The subsection on military servicemembers will pay special attention to cultural considerations for working with military clients and the unique benefits of EACP for this population. Special attention will also be paid to the most common presenting concerns for servicemembers including trauma, PTS, and PTSD, Moral injury, depression and suicidality, traumatic brain injuries, and military sexual trauma (MST). The chapter ends with a brief discussion on providing EACP for military dependents including spouses and children.
