ABSTRACT

There are numerous ethical and other considerations in the practice of equine-assisted counseling and psychotherapy (EACP). Although some such considerations are not unique to EACP, this modality presents unique challenges that would not be encountered in a traditional office-based setting. This chapter presents ethical considerations related to multiple relationships and therapeutic boundaries, transference and countertransference, client screening, termination, multicultural and diversity considerations, and in-session crises. Other considerations are wholly unique to EACP such as maintaining client physical safety, limit-setting, equine welfare, and session debriefing and supervision. This chapter provides a review of these considerations and suggestions to manage potential ethical issues that arise in EACP sessions.
