ABSTRACT

The chapter will open with a review of the benefits of the natural outdoor environment in counseling and psychotherapy. The chapter will detail the different working areas in equine-assisted counseling and psychotherapy (barn, arena, round pen, pen or paddock, and pasture) including definitions of each activity area, the advantages and drawbacks of particular activity areas for both client and equine welfare, and guidelines for working in each area. This section will also describe the potential privacy concerns related to working outside of an office-based setting and considerations to increase client privacy.
