ABSTRACT

The energy sector includes companies that obtain, refine and market primary energy supplies such as gas, oil and coal, as well as those generating electrical energy. The training needs of companies in this sector cover a wide range, from general management to highly specialised technical procedures. Training in safety and emergency procedures is particularly important. Training and retraining needs also arise when new technology is introduced, although the pace of change is not as fast in most parts of the energy sector as it is in telecommunications. These training needs, and their wide variety, are nowhere better exemplified than in the nuclear power industry, as the case study of the Central Electricity Generating Board shows. Within Chevron Information Technology is the computer services department, of which the training section provides data processing training throughout the corporation, primarily on a mainframe system. The chapter describes East Midlands Electricity Generating Board and Shell Exploration and Production.
