ABSTRACT

Of all types of manufacturing companies, those that produce computers would seem to have most reason to use computers in training. New training needs arose with the advent of the microcomputer and, through it, the creation of a large pool of computer users who were not data processing professionals. New authoring systems, new hardware and new computer based training (CBT) software for interactive training that included graphics and animation were developed by computer manufacturing companies and by a growing number of other commercial agencies, many of them staffed by trainers as well as computer specialists. Like other companies, those manufacturing computers had training needs in the field of management, finance and sales, some or all of which might be met by CBT provided on the companies' own hardware. The chapter presents some of the computer manufacturing companies such as Apple Computer, Data General, Digital Equipment Corporation, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, NCR Corporation, Rank Xerox and Xerox Corporation.
